HOUSTON – If you were anywhere near the Reliant Stadium Sunday night, there was no question who was in town.
Pink, orange, flowers, sequins, cowboy hats and tropical looks were everywhere.
Karol G fans did not simply show up for a concert. They dressed for the Tropicoqueta theme, and some groups went all out with coordinated outfits.
Inside, the energy kept building as thousands of people filled the stadium.
And this crowd was ready to sing.
But before Karol G took over, Greeicy had the job of getting Houston warmed up.
Greeicy gets Houston moving
Opening a show in a stadium packed with Karol G fans is not an easy assignment.
Greeicy came out dancing and immediately started working to get the crowd involved.
She wanted Houston louder.
Then louder again.
You got the sense that a lot of people in the audience did not know every song she performed. There were a few songs where you heard the crowd recognize the music almost immediately, but others were clearly new to many people in the stadium.
That did not hurt the performance.
Greeicy kept dancing, talking to the crowd and pushing people to get on their feet.
By the end of her set, she had done her job.
People who walked into the stadium waiting for Karol G were now talking about Greeicy too.
Then came the wait everyone had been anticipating.
Houston understood the assignment
Before Karol G even appeared, one thing stood out.
The crowd.
Fans dressed like they were part of the show.
There were groups in matching colors, people covered in flowers and outfits inspired by Karol G’s Tropicoqueta era.
Everywhere you looked, someone had planned their outfit around the concert.
Then there were the necklaces.
Fans were given light-up necklaces that became part of the show.
Once the concert started, thousands of them began changing with the music.
One song would start and entire sections of the stadium would light up. Then another song would begin and the colors would change.
At times, you almost did not know whether to look at the stage or turn around and look at the stadium.
The crowd became part of the production.
Then the lights went down.
Karol G starts with ‘Latina Foreva’
The first notes hit.
Karol G appeared.
And the place went crazy.
She opened with “Latina Foreva,” and from that point forward, there was not much sitting happening around us.
People were screaming.
People were dancing.
Phones were everywhere.
And when Karol G stopped singing, Houston kept going for her.
There were moments when thousands of people were singing the same lyrics back to her, loud enough to take over the stadium.
That became one of the best parts of the show.
For all the production happening onstage, Karol G did not need to constantly ask the audience for energy.
They were already giving it to her.
The entire stadium became part of the show
The production was huge.
Different parts of the concert had different looks, outfits, dancers and visuals.
But those light-up necklaces kept connecting everything happening onstage to the people watching.
When the mood of a song changed, the stadium changed with it.
During some songs, the crowd was surrounded by bright colors.
During others, thousands of smaller lights filled the seats.
Looking across the stadium and seeing all those necklaces moving together was one of those things video does not completely capture.
You had to see how big it looked in person.
And the crowd never seemed to lose energy.
The opening beat of another hit would start and you would hear the reaction before Karol G even sang the first line.
That happened again and again throughout the night.
More than one sound
Karol G also did not stay in one lane musically.
The show moved through the different sounds she has brought into her music over the years.
There was reggaeton.
There was pop.
There were tropical sounds.
There were Mexican influences.
There were moments built for dancing and others where Karol G slowed things down and let her voice and the crowd carry the song.
It helped keep the show from feeling like one long set.
Every section felt different.
Then came a moment that changed the energy all over again.
Wait, is that Drake?
For a few seconds, people around us seemed confused.
Someone was coming onto the stage.
Then people realized who it was.
Drake.
The reaction was immediate.
The stadium exploded.
Phones went straight into the air.
People started screaming before he even had a chance to do much of anything.
Karol G had managed to keep one of the biggest surprises of the night quiet.
Drake joined her to perform “Ahí.”
And once the song was over, he did not leave.
He performed two more songs for the Houston crowd.
For a few minutes, Karol G’s concert suddenly became a surprise Drake show too.
The crowd went crazy.
People around us were looking at each other almost asking, “Is this seriously happening?”
It was.
And then, almost as quickly as he appeared, the surprise was over.
Karol G takes the night back
Bringing out Drake is the type of surprise that might become the only thing people remember from a concert.
But Karol G still had a show to finish.
And she took control of the stadium again.
The songs kept coming.
The necklaces kept changing.
The crowd kept singing.
By this point, the people around us had been standing and dancing for hours, and somehow they were still going.
That is what stood out most about the night.
There was never a point where the stadium seemed to check out.
Even after one of the biggest surprises of the show, people were ready for whatever Karol G did next.
One last song
Karol G started the night with “Latina Foreva.”
She ended it with “Provenza.”
And Houston knew exactly what to do.
One more time, thousands of voices filled the stadium.
One more time, the necklaces lit up around the crowd.
One more time, nearly everyone around us had their phones in the air.
Then it was over.
Hours earlier, Greeicy had walked onto that stage trying to get Houston louder.
By the end of “Provenza,” there was nothing left to ask from this crowd.
They had spent the night singing, dancing, screaming and becoming part of the show themselves.
Karol G brought Tropicoqueta to Houston.
Houston dressed for it, lit up for it and made sure she heard them.
